Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh The Caledonian

Waldorf Astoria The Caledonian, still known locally as The Caley, is a landmark 5-star hotel in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, UK. Now included in the portfolio of the ultra-luxe Waldorf Astoria brand, this iconic hotel has beautiful views of Edinburgh Castle.

Built at the end of the Victorian age as an imposing and classic red sandstone-fronted railway station, the upper building opened as a hotel built-in 1903. The resort has recently been renovated and modernized and remains a premier accommodation in the city's heart.

Location

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh commands a prime position at the western end of Princes Street. The street runs alongside the charming Princes Street Gardens. This is at the crossover point between the old city and the new town. This famous area has plenty of shops, eateries, clubs, pubs, souvenir shops, museums, and entertainment.

Moreover, many of the city's famous sites are within easy reach of the property either on foot or by the public transport system. For example, the tram system runs through the city to Edinburgh Airport with the Princes Street stop, taking about 30 minutes. Besides, all stops have wheelchair access.

The Old Town

This district has cobbled streets, narrow alleys, and historic buildings and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Moreover, the Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle. This is where they keep the Scottish Crown Jewels to the seat of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. Here too, is the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It is the Queen's official residence in Scotland.

Style and Hospitality

Princes Street Railway Station closed in 1965. However, the hotel preserved the memory by retaining the grand façade of pillars, arches, and classical sculpture. The elegant lobby dazzles with chandeliers, a sweeping staircase, and a wrought-iron railing. There are also marble supporting columns and stained glass windows.

The grandeur may belong to a previous age, but the Waldorf Astoria The Caledonian harmonizes it with contemporary New York styling and every modern amenity. Furthermore, Scottish keynotes and hospitality begin at the door. Welcoming staff garbed themselves in Scottish tartan and celebrated. Scots malt whiskeys are available in the bar.

Features

Wi-Fi is free throughout. There are also business services and ample event space for conferences or meetings. Facilities include a glamorous lounge for appointments, afternoon tea, eating, chatting, and drinking. There are also two gourmet restaurants, an opulent Guerlain spa, an indoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center.

Rooms are spacious and luxurious. Moreover, unique rooms are available for accessibility, and all public rooms are fully accessible. There is no additional room fee for children staying with adults. By arrangement, you can also take along small pets (fee applies).

Rooms

The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh The Caledonian's 241 rooms and suites ooze elegance and comfort. Soft, warm fabrics and plaids combine with subtle, soothing colors of mauve Scottish heathers and the smoky greys and blues of buildings and highland mountains.

The Queen's carriages are Victorian railway coaches' style, referencing the Caledonian's history as a railway hotel. Additionally, walnut-brown walls and burr veneered furnishings, ornate lamps, and metalwork finishes give authentic touches to copper and washbasins in the lavishly appointed bathrooms.

All rooms feature 21st-century amenities, including LCD TV, Wi-Fi, and Nespresso coffee machines. Each also has comfortable bedding and fine linens. Marble bathrooms have walk-in showers and tubs, luxury Ferragamo bath toiletries, soft robes, and slippers. Furthermore, premier rooms benefit from stunning views of the castle and personal concierge services.

Suites

These add more living space and sofa seating. Plus, there is access to the spa facilities, private concierge, and in-room dining services. In addition, Castle View suites have exceptional views from expansive windows, Waldorf Astoria luxury beds, Serta mattresses, and premier cotton linens.

Additionally, ultra-luxe suites are named after notable Scots like Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Sir Walter Scott. Furthermore, the Alexander Graham Bell Suite and others feature high vaulted ceilings. They also have decorative fireplaces, fine paintings, and gilt-edged mirrors.

Restaurant and Bar

The Pompadour and Grazing. These two restaurants are different in style and décor. They also feature the unique culinary creations of master chefs Dean Banks and Mark Greenaway.

In the beautiful fin de siècle dining room, The Pompadour expresses a sustainable food philosophy and Scottish fine dining in tasting menus. Chef Greenaway also supports the promotion of Scottish food and locally sourced ingredients.

Moreover, seafood is a specialty in both. The Courtyard offers an array of oysters, lobsters, crayfish, and caviar in an outdoor hut setting. Warm blankets and hot water bottles are thoughtfully provided for chilly evenings.

Additionally, guests can continue with Scotland's finest in the Caley Bar. This is where you'll get fine malt whiskeys and signature cocktails.

Peacock Alley

The former station concourse and ticket office have been reinvented. Nods to the NYC hotel; it is now a sumptuous lounge for casual meals and meetings. The old station clock is a reminder of the hotel's history.

This is a place to linger over coffee, a light lunch or cocktails, socialize, and relax. Furthermore, try the famous champagne teatime ritual. This is where sweet and savory delights are served while the bottle of bubbly is expertly decapitated with a saber.

Spa and Fitness

Waldorf Astoria The Caledonian boasts the UK's only Guerlain Spa. This is where guests get personalized Parisian-style skincare treatments in serene surroundings. Moreover, expert therapists determine the right perfume for each guest. These are then used throughout the treatments starting with a foot spa bath. The spa also contains an indoor pool, whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room, and a gym and fitness center.

Culture

Scotland has its own distinctive culture within the UK. Edinburgh is a city of extraordinary architecture, many cultural buildings, and events. The National Gallery stands where the old and new parts of the city meet, close by the hotel.

Additionally, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the International Festival attract visitors and performers from around the world. The museum and the castle give fascinating insights into the history and character of the Scots and this capital city on the southern shores of the Firth of Forth.

Takeaway

Scotland is a land of mountains, highlands, and lochs with historic cities like the capital Edinburgh. This luxury hotel offers first-class accommodation from which to start exploring this unique country.
